2019 Clemson in state Commit Johnathan Weitz (Porter Gaud HS) Kicker
Recently, while on a traditional vacation to Folly Beach, SC with my daughters, we were being tourist and arriving at the beach for a day of family fun. I never intended to see my leisure time and my passion for Clemson football come together at the same time as it did this day.
I was with my family and we were getting set up on the beach, when we solicited the help of a young man nearby setting up our chairs and umbrellas. We had no idea at the time that we would have this common interest which was his ambition to play football at Clemson, and my passion for recording all things Clemson. As I soon found out this polite young man I just met was none other than recent Clemson commit Johnathan Weitz of Porter Gaud HS in nearby Charleston.
Getting to know Johnathan on this afternoon I was able to see a young man of impeccable work ethic, as through out the day I was amazed at the grit and grind, pace and polite demeanor at which he approached each task.
After meeting Johnathan, I was intrigued by his comments mentioning his commitment article that had recently been published on ClemsonSportsNews. At the time, he was unaware of my affiliation with C-S-N as co-publisher and contributor. I then mentioned to him I was a part of the C-S-N team that had published said article, and inquired if he would not mind elaborating on his commitment. He replied
“absolutely” . . .
So we tendered the following 5 questions to Johnathan about his commitment and Clemson. . .
CSN: Johnathan tell us about your commitment and why you picked Clemson.
JW: ” The main reason Clemson stood out for me and why I picked them was because of the family feeling I had from everyone of the coaches and players while I was at camp and throughout the recruiting process. It was an environment I felt comfortable in definitely. When I was first meeting some of the coaches it felt like I had known them for years and that was the atmosphere that I wanted!”
CSN: How did you tell the staff you were committing and how did they react ?
JW: ” I first sent a text to Coach Elliott the night before I went to the South Carolina camp and told him that I was going to the South Carolina camp to compete against some people, but whatever happens doesn’t matter because I’m committing! I have him a call a few days later and he was really excited about it and wanted me to call Coach Swinney to tell him myself! The call with Coach Swinney was great, he seemed just as excited as I was about the commitment which is a really good feeling knowing that I am wanted! “
CSN: Was there any other school you had seriously considered before picking the Tigers ?
JW: “South Carolina and Georgia Tech were 2 schools that I was definitely highly considering, but the night before I even went to compete at South Carolina I committed to Clemson! The other schools didn’t have the welcoming environment that I found at Clemson. On all fronts Clemson is the place for me and it is exciting that I have this opportunity to be in such a good place, apart of such a great program! “
CSN: Have you spoken with fellow special teams commit Aidan Swanson about the next few years on the kicking units.?
JW: ” I have not spoken with him yet, I need to reach out to him soon! Really looking forward to getting to know the guy I’m gonna be training and hanging with in the following 4 years. “
CSN: What is your favorite thing about Clemson and what it holds for you In the next 4 years ?
JW: ” My favorite thing that Clemson has to offer is the great education specifically the new business school that is being built. You rarely see a program as good Clemson’s that also has the strong academics that Clemson does. Paw Journey with Jeff Davis is also an amazing program that will allow me to grow as man and give me great opportunities in the future to become the person I want to be! The whole program at Clemson is insane and so glad I can say I’m going to be joining it!”
