Senior Spotlight: Will Spiers
By Makenna Biehl
One of the most versatile players in the Clemson football senior class is redshirt senior, Will Spiers. Spiers dominates fourth downs with his consistent punting for the team. Last year he averaged 42.3 yards on 53 punts in 15 games, with 20 downed inside the 20, and a career-high 13 punts of 50 yards or more. His success on the field landed him a career-high 41.7-yard net average, which is the second-best single-season mark in Clemson football history. Spiers is always prepared to step onto the field whenever needed to assist the team, saying, “The offense has done a great job and we haven’t had to punt that much this season, but [I’m] just always staying ready for my opportunity never knowing when I’m going to punt. You’ve just got to be ready.”
Not only does Spiers show his dominance in special teams, but he’s also prepared for the role of quarterback. “I played (quarterback) sophomore, junior, and senior year of high school. Especially in my senior year, we passed a little bit more,” Spiers said. With the transfer of Chase Brice, the team was only left with three quarterbacks on the active roster going into spring practice. So, Spiers stepped up to the job to add to the quarterback room. He attended quarterback meetings and was able to throw some during spring practice. “It’s a lot to keep up with. It just gets more and more, so I got to go back and review and absorb as much as I can,” said Spiers.
Spiers consistently puts in as much work as he can to better not only himself but the team as a whole. The hard work has helped contribute to the consistent playoff appearances by the Tigers, which is one of Spiers’s favorite things about being a part of the team. “It’s a blessing,” he said. “It’s a crazy opportunity. I’m just blessed to be a part of it. It’s really cool to get to share this experience with all of my teammates and coaches and everybody. It’s really cool.” Spiers is going into his senior season with the right mindset and dedication to make it to the final playoff appearance of his career.
