One on One with Amari Rodgers

Son of former Tennessee quarterback, Tee Martin, who lead the Volunteers to the 1998 National Championship, Amari Rodgers made a huge impact on the Tiger offense as a first-year freshman and is having a spectacular sophomore season. During his freshman year, Rodgers had 19 receptions for 123 yards in 239 snaps over 14 games. He also had a team-tying-high three receptions for 19 yards and a seven-yard punt return against Kent State.

A Knoxville, Tennessee native, Rodgers played in the Under Armour All-American Game in Orlando, Florida and was a national top-100 prospect by ESPN and was rated 104 by 247 Sports, seventh in the state and No.15 at the wide receiver position.

Q – Amari, you have become a huge leader on this Clemson Offense. How does it feel to be considered a leader?

Rodgers –  It makes me feel really good that the team can look to me as a leader even though I am young, I just turned 19 yesterday. That really shows my maturity coming in as a young guy. I feel great about that.

Q – Were you a  punt returner in High School? Would you say that is your forte?

Rodgers – I did do punt returns in High School, but nobody really kicked it to me as much. But I never really got the chance to do it. Whenever I got here and they put me back there, I was like yeah, this could be my side thing cause last year I was back up to Ray-Ray too, so that was another thing that I learned from him was how to get north and things like that. Just another thing I learned from the older guys and taking it into this year and it is paying off.

Q – Being from Tennessee, what was it like getting acclimated to Clemson as an out of state student? Was it easier for you coming in with Tee Higgins?

Rodgers – It was definitely easier coming in with someone like Tee because Knoxville is not that big of a city and Clemson is not either. So it really did not take that much to get acclimated to that part, it was just a different area to get acclimated to and I feel like having someone from the same area as me helped out definitely.
