Bryan Bresee; Goal Accomplished

By Zachary Wagner

When Bryan Bresee committed last april to play football at Clemson University, he had one goal in mind. Bresee told his high school coach that he wanted to start as a freshman. Flash forward to September of 2020, and Bresee has accomplished that goal. Yesterday Clemson released its first depth chart prior to opening the season against Wake Forest, and the Maryland native saw his name called as a co-starter at defensive tackle.

Bresee will most likely split snaps with redshirt junior Jordan Williams and 5th-year graduate Nyles Pinckney. Sophomore Tyler Davis will line up at the other defensive tackle after recording five and a half sacks as a freshman last season.

During time with the media, everyone who has been asked about Bresee and his talents have reported back with rave reviews. Head Coach Dabo Swinney spoke on Bresee today and stated earlier in the week: “I don’t think we’ve ever had anyone like him.”

Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables also sung his high praises for Bresee and the rest of the freshman defensive linemen.

“It’s a group of guys that came in with a lot of to-do, and a lot of hype,” Venables told the media via his Zoom press conference on Monday. “It’s a group of guys that have, to me, over delivered up to this point. The talent is there.”

It is not only the coaches that are noticing just how much of a natural talent Bresee is, his fellow teammate members are as well. Take it from Matt Bockhorst who has the duty of blocking the former #1 overall recruit in the nation in practice everyday.

“His explosiveness and get-off, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. He’s a great athlete and unbelievably gifted. That kid (Bresee) is going to be an impact play for sure. He’s certainly living up to his billing and he’s a hard worker and I have a lot of respect for him.”

Don’t be surprised if you see #11 trot out the first time the defensee steps on the field on saturday. We all may have to do a double-take, no that’s not Isaiah Simmons, it’s Bryan Bresee.
