Dabo Swinney held his weekly press conference on Tuesday morning discussing with the gathered media this week’s opponent the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coached by Paul Johnson. Swinney opened the presser with a few comments on this weeks opponent and the goals for his team at this point in the season.
Dabo stated in his opening remarks “a lot at stake on Saturday” when talking about the upcoming trip down I-85 to Atlanta and the contest to be held at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
He was very complimentary of Georgia Tech and its program but he was quick to remind all gathered that Tech was a “Place that we really have not had a ton of success”. Swinney did bring up that this senior class is prepared to go 4-0 against the Jackets if they can come out with the win, adding “This senior class has a unique opportunity” On the approach he is taking with his team in regard to this weeks contest, he mentioned that the team will have to “Apply the lessons we learned from the first three games” And reminded all the media that “Georgia Tech is a good football team.. I know they are 1-2 and that is were people make a mistake” expounding on that by recalling that the Pitt game was a “one score game” Further discussing Tech and how they managed to lose the two games he pointed out that they had “Fake punt that did not go their way”.
The Tiger head coach also pointed out that “Defensively they got a new defensive coordinator from Appalachian St. who does a good job for them” Coach Swinney then expanded on their offense and how they have averaged ” Throwing the ball around 17 times a game”. Pointing out that they can lull you into complacency on the back end and hit you with “Huge chunk type plays”. Making sure to mention that the Tigers have to “Defensively be disciplined” and the linebackers and safeties “Cant get bored doing your job on the back end”. Swinney also brought up how the defense will be “Taking on the cut blocks ” more so than any of the other option attacks that Furman and Georgia Southern presented with their run games . Telling the media that the defense will indeed need to play with “great pursuit”
Some more talking points included how the turnover margin against Georgia Tech is important as you will experience less chances against their defense due to the ball control and clock management that Paul Johnson utilizes to his advantage, pointing out the offense has to convert at a high level .
When asked the difference between the versions of the option run by Furman, Ga Southern and now Georgia Tech Dabo replied “They are different Furman, GA Southern and Tech are very different ….its like Ice cream is ice cream but they are all different flavors” Speaking highly of Coach Johnson, Swinney expounded on “Paul Johnson’s career speaks for itself” . . . “When you done it as long as him, he knows it inside and out ” and on being prepared for Johnson and his triple option attack.. “If you are not really schooled up … he’s gonna get ya ” Telling all the media that for his team to be successful against this Tech team you have “Play with your hands, understand formations, understand splits, and do a great job of playing with your hands”
